Help
Short answers to the questions people ask most about installing, activating and using SIP.
Install SIP
SIP runs on phones and tablets. On the device you'll use it on, open Get the app, choose your type of device and follow the steps. It takes a couple of minutes.
If your agency manages its devices centrally, your device management team can install SIP for you. The download page lists the details they need.
Find your device code
Every device has its own device code: eight characters in two groups, like ABCD-1234. Open SIP and look on the Activate SIP screen, under Your device code. There's a Copy button beside it.
The code belongs to the device, not to you. It stays the same when you reinstall SIP, and changes only when the device is reset to its factory settings.
Activate SIP
Each device needs an activation code: sixteen characters, like ABCD-EFGH-JKMN-PQRS.
- On a free trial, sign in, choose to activate a device and enter its device code. The activation code appears on screen, and a copy is emailed to you. Setting up several devices? Activate them one after another.
- On a paid plan, your agency administrator or licence manager gives you a licence. Your code is in My devices when you sign in, and in the email or activation link they sent you.
Then type the activation code into SIP under Activation code and tap Activate.
A new or replaced phone or tablet
A licence works on one device at a time.
- Reinstalled SIP on the same device? Its device code hasn't changed, so the same activation code works. Get it again from My devices or your activation link.
- A new device, or one reset to factory settings? It has a new device code. On a trial, activate it as another device. On a paid plan, ask your agency administrator or licence manager to move your licence to the new device.
The old device keeps working offline until its licence ends.
The code email hasn't arrived
- Give it a minute or two. Most arrive in seconds, but agency mail filters can hold them.
- Check your junk or spam folder, and any quarantine your IT team runs. Adding postmaster@searchinprogress.app to your safe senders helps next time.
- Check the email address you entered for any typos.
- Still nothing? Ask for a new code. The newest code is the one that works.
Sign-in codes and waiting to resend
There's no password to remember. To sign in you enter your email, and we email you a 6-digit code and a sign-in link. Either works once, for 15 minutes. A new code replaces the old one, so use the latest email.
To keep your account safe, the "Send a new code" button waits a little longer each time: 1 minute after the first code, 2 minutes after the second, then 3 minutes. You can have up to 5 codes an hour and 10 a day. The button shows how long is left.
Expiry and renewal
- Trials: each trial device works for 30 days from the day it's first activated. An agency can add up to 10 trial devices in the first 30 days of its trial.
- Paid licences last for the term your agency bought. We email a reminder before they end, and your agency administrator renews them from Billing.
- A renewal gives each device a new activation code. Enter it in SIP before the old one ends and nothing stops.
- If a licence does end, SIP shows a reminder for 14 days and then asks for a new activation code before it opens. Everything on the device stays there, and a new code picks up where you left off.
Working offline
SIP is built to work without a connection. Once a device is activated, SIP checks its licence on the device itself and keeps what you capture on the device, so it works with no signal at all.
You need a connection only to download SIP, to sign in to this portal and to receive codes by email.
